In 2020 I started a research placement with Gallery Oldham [the bryophytes project] bringing my fascination with the microscopic world of moss to the forefront of my practice, making a re-connection with my early interests in ecological art and pond life during the formative years of my practice. I am fascinated with these ecologically diverse and resilient micro biomes which often thrive in peripheral urban spaces. The images below show a series of terrariums created in September 2020 using small samples of moss collected from the urban environment (the large bowl was planted in 2012). Each is airtight and needs no maintenance – the plants have created their own self-sustaining environment. I created a new series of terrariums linked to a moss map to document my research process.
